Download for Linux
Install the free alpha on Linux
This is an early alpha. Expect bugs and rough edges, and things may change between updates. Keep your original footage backed up, and don't rely on it for deadline work yet. If something breaks, please tell us at support@textbased.video.
Pick your package
Ubuntu 22.04 and 24.04, Linux Mint 21 and 22 · 64-bit (x86_64)
Download .deb- Download the .deb file.
- Double-click it to open it in your software installer, then click Install. Or, in a terminal:
sudo apt install ./textbased.video-linux-amd64.deb - Open textbased.video from your apps.
Each link always downloads the newest version. Version numbers and SHA-256 checksums are on the release page.
Video playback
For H.264 video (most cameras and phones), you need your graphics card's video decoding or your Linux version's full codecs (GStreamer libav). Fedora's basic OpenH264 isn't enough. We don't include any codecs: both downloads use your computer's own.
- Ubuntu and Mint (.deb): nothing to do. The .deb installs them for you.
- Bazzite: already included, nothing to install.
- Anything missing? The app tells you the first time you open it, with the commands to install them.
Updates
- AppImage: it updates itself. When a new version is out, the app shows “A new version of textbased.video is ready”. Click “Restart to update”. Each update is signed and checked before it installs.
- .deb: the app tells you when a new version is out and its Download button opens this page. Install the new .deb over the old one: double-click it, or run
sudo apt install ./textbased.video-linux-amd64.deb. Your projects and settings stay.
